A snowboard rides only as well as the interplay between board, bindings and boots. If you combine these three parts correctly, you will have more control, more comfort and more enjoyment of your day on the slopes. This guide explains what to look for in terms of length, bindings and boots, and presents selected remaining stock from our Snowboards category.
The right board length
The length of a snowboard depends on your height, weight and riding style. As an initial guide: if the board stands upright in front of you, it should end roughly between your chin and nose.
| Criterion | Rather shorter | Rather longer |
|---|---|---|
| Body weight | lighter riders | heavier riders |
| Riding style | freestyle, park, beginners | freeride, fast carving turns |
| Ride feel | easy to turn and playful | smooth and stable at speed |
Weight is often more important than height, because it determines how much the board flexes. Many manufacturers therefore specify a weight range. If your weight is within this range, the board will generally suit you even if the length differs slightly.
Board, bindings and boots must match
The three components form a unit. Pay particular attention to these points:
- Boot size and board width: the toe and heel of the boot should protrude only slightly beyond the edges. Large feet need a wider board, otherwise the boots will drag in the snow.
- Binding size: bindings come in sizes such as M or L. The boot must sit firmly in the binding without pinching.
- Binding system: not every boot fits every system. Check whether your boot is designed for classic strap bindings, Flow bindings or step-in systems.
- Stiffness: a soft flex in board, bindings and boots makes turning easier for beginners. Stiffer components transfer power more directly and give more support at higher speeds.
If you buy your equipment separately, you will find snowboard boots in a category of their own; bindings are currently available in a set with the matching board. You should always choose the boot first, as it determines the binding size.
Advantages of a set
With a board and binding set, the board and bindings are already matched to each other. This saves you searching for compatible components and is an uncomplicated solution, especially for beginners and those returning to the sport. All you then need is a boot in your size that fits the binding system.
Don't forget your helmet and goggles
A helmet is now part of the basic equipment. It should sit firmly without pinching and be adjustable to your head circumference via a dial. Good goggles protect against UV radiation, wind and snow glare. It is important that helmet and goggles fit together and that there is no gap at the forehead. You will find a selection among our snowboard helmets and ski goggles.
